In the fall of 2010, a woman named Trudy Loman went on a blind date with a man who had recently graduated from the police academy. He was young and handsome, with the type of athletic body Trudy appreciated. He was also surprisingly modest and self-aware for someone so good-looking—a rare combo, in Trudy’s limited experience.

They had a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant in Stevensville (she smiled to herself when she saw the sign that read Love Point Road, wondering if that might be a good omen), and then they talked for hours while sharing a bottle of Chianti.

At one point during the conversation, Trudy, who was still in her early twenties and had never known anyone who’d been a police officer, asked this man if he really believed he could draw his gun and kill another human being.

“Absolutely,” said the man, without hesitation. Then he added: “It’s not the killing that’s the trouble, I would think, but the mess that follows.”
